Arsenal have kept their title charge on track with a brilliant 4-2 comeback victory over Aston Villa, one of the best and most dramatic Premier League matches you’ll see all season.
Unai Emery’s reunion with his former club didn’t quite go to plan. First-half goals from Ollie Watkins and Philippe Coutinho gave the hosts the lead twice, but they were unable to hold on.
Bukayo Saka’s clinical strike put Arsenal on level terms midway through the first half and Oleksandr Zinchenko equalised a second time with his first-ever Premier League goal.
Aaron Ramsdale was then forced into a couple of important saves as Villa nearly took the lead for a third time in a madcap, end-to-end final 15 minutes.
But it was Arsenal that claimed all three points on the day, thanks to a brilliant long-range effort from January signing Jorginho in injury-time. The Italy international’s fierce strike only hit the woodwork but came back out and rebounded off former Arsenal ‘keeper Emiliano Martinez.
Martinez’s day then went from bad to worse. The Argentinian went up to make amends, hoping to score from a corner, but he was caught out when Arsenal cleared, regained possession, and sent substitute Gabriel Martinelli through with an open goal.
The Brazilian celebrated before he stuck the ball into the back of the empty net, sending the travelling Arsenal fans into ecstacy in the away end.
“That’s the Premier League. That’s why it’s the best league in the world. It’s just beautiful,” Jorginho told BT Sport after the final whistle.
“It was very important after the last results we had. The start wasn’t easy when we were not producing our game. We came in at half-time, had a chat and then we went back doing the basics we need to do and changed the game.”
Before the late drama, Arsenal’s mid-season blip looked in danger of becoming a full-scale wobble. Could the injury-time heroics be the spark that gets Arsenal back on track?
